Japan's Government Bonds Advance on Fed Debt Purchase Plan

Japan’s bonds rose, pushing 10-year yields toward a seven-year low, after Federal Reserve policy makers said they plan to purchase government debt in their first attempt to boost the economy in more than a year.

Bonds also gained after a report showed Japan’s machine orders grew at a slower pace than economists had forecast and the yen strengthened toward an eight-month high, damping the outlook for exporters’ earnings. The government will sell 2.4 trillion yen ($28 billion) of five-year notes today.

“Financial markets will pay the most attention to whether the Fed’s balance sheet will expand further,” said Akito Fukunaga, chief rates strategist in Tokyo at Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc., Britain’s biggest government-owned bank. “As there’s still a risk Treasuries may surge, it’s not the time for investors to go short on Japan’s bonds.” A short position is a bet an asset will fall.

The yield on the 1.1 percent bond due June 2020 fell 2.5 basis points to 1.005 percent at 9:02 a.m. in Tokyo at Japan Bond Trading Co., the nation’s largest interdealer debt broker. Yeah, I tried to play a couple of times this morning - realizing quickly that I should stick to the full-size arcade version. Three children were among the victims of a tornado that tore through central Mississippi over the weekend, a coroner said Sunday.

Two sisters, ages 9 and 14, were killed inside a mobile home, Choctaw County Coroner Keith Coleman told CNN. Separately, a 3-month-old baby died because of the twister, he said.

The tornado, almost a mile wide, killed at least 10 people and decimated neighborhoods as it raked cities from the central western border with Louisiana northeastward to Alabama.

Georgia backs Out of Eurovision Song Contest

Georgia has decided to pull out of the Eurovision Sing Contest after concluding that the disqualification of its controversial song was the result of pressure from Moscow.

The Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) refused to either rewrite the lyrics of the song or select another song for the contest after receiving the bad news from the Committee of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Levan Kubaneishvili, head of GPB, said in a letter to Eurovision Executive Director Svante Stockselius that his company "disagrees with the [EBU's] decision and considers it groundless.”

The EBU concluded on March 10 that the lyrics of the Georgian entry for the 54th Eurovision Song Contest, We Don't Wanna Put In, do not comply with the rules of the competition. The EBU referred to Section 4 Rule 9 of its regulations, which states: “The lyrics and/or performance of the songs shall not bring the Shows or the Eurovision Song Contest as such into disrepute. No lyrics, speeches, gestures of a political or similar nature shall be permitted during the Eurovision Song Contest. But numerous strategists in both parties agreed a gain of at least 20 seems likely and a dozen or more GOP-held seats are in doubt. Only a handful of Democratic House seats appear in any sort of jeopardy. They spoke only on condition of anonymity, saying they were relying on confidential polling data.

In the Senate, as in the House, only the magnitude of the Democratic gains is in doubt.

New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, head of the Democratic committee, said his party would have to win seats in "deeply red states" to amass a 60-seat majority, but added, "We're close."

Obama's methodical files voter registration efforts in the primary season and his current get-out-the-vote efforts are aiding Democratic candidates in several Southern races. Computers help docs spot breast cancer on X-rays

Like spell-checkers looking for mistakes, the computers flag suspicious areas on X-rays for a closer look by a radiologist. Mammograms are used to screen women for early signs of breast cancer but the tests aren't perfect. In the U.S., the X-rays are read by a single radiologist and cancers are sometimes missed.

Computer-aided detection, or CAD, was developed to help radiologists pick up more cancers. Approved a decade ago, these computer programs are now used for about a third of the nation's mammograms. But the value and accuracy of the technology has continued to be debated.

Now, British researchers are reporting results from a randomized study of 31,000 women. Mammograms in Britain are routinely checked by two radiologists or technicians, which is thought to be better than a single review. Researchers wanted to know if a single expert aided by a computer could do as well as two pairs of eyes.

They found that computer-aided detection spotted nearly the same number of cancers, 198 out of 227, compared to 199 for the two readers.

In places like the United States, "Where single reading is standard practice, computer-aided detection has the potential to improve cancer-detection rates to the level achieved by double reading," the researchers said. Their findings were published online Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine,

The study was done at three centers in England that do a large number of routine mammograms. Most of the women in the study were assigned to have their mammograms reviewed twice — once by a pair of experts and a second time by a single reviewer aided by a computer.

"What we demonstrated was that one reader using CAD could pick up as many cancers as the two readers could," said radiologist Fiona J. Gilbert of the University of Aberdeen, lead author of the study.

She said computer-aided detection could be used to expand screening by Britain's national health service, which now offers the test every three years to women 50 to 70. The cost-effectiveness will have to be determined first, she said.

The new findings are encouraging, said Dr. Carol H. Lee, a radiologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

"In the United States, it's just not practical in most practices to do double readings by physicians," said Lee, who is head of the American College of Radiology's Breast Imaging Commission. Women donors triple contributions. The study, released Tuesday by the Women’s Campaign Forum Foundation, found that women have given $109 million to presidential candidates in checks of $200 or more – triple the amount female donors delivered in 2000, with still two months to go in the race.

Not surprisingly, Hillary Clinton received a major portion of the cash. Women donated about $60 million to her presidential campaign, about half of the New York senator’s total donations of more than $200.

But the presence of the first viable female presidential candidate was just one motivating factor, according to the study and a survey done by the foundation.

The expanded use of the Internet to generate donations fits neatly with the way women evaluate and respond to political appeals , said Ilana Goldman, the foundation’s president.

“Women want to build a relationship and learn something about a candidate,” said Goldman. “Before the Internet, that took a lot more time and was a lot more expensive.”

Internet donations are generally small, the majority of which are often below the $200 threshold for publicly reporting a donor’s name. But if the larger donor base is any indication, female giving is also up in the online community – perhaps at even larger percentages.

Since the nation's birth, Americans have discussed race and avoided it, organized neighborhoods and political movements around it, and used it to divide and hurt people even as relations have improved dramatically since the days of slavery, Reconstruction and legal segregation.
Now, in what could be a historic year for a black presidential candidate, a new Associated Press-Yahoo!
News poll, conducted with Stanford University, shows just how wide a gap remains between whites and blacks.
It shows that a substantial portion of white Americans still harbor negative feelings toward blacks. It shows that blacks and whites disagree tremendously on how much racial prejudice exists, whose fault it is and how much influence blacks have in politics.

One result is that Barack Obama's path to the presidency is steeper than it would be if he were white.

Until now, social scientists have not closely examined racial sentiments on a nationwide scale at a moment when race is central to choosing the next president. Security Breach Outside Emmy Theater Delays a Few Stars But Not the Show. Los Angeles police confirm to E! News that a security breach occurred at a checkpoint near the downtown Los Angeles venue at about 3:30 p.m., just as the red carpet action was starting to pick up before the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
