Japan's Government Bonds Advance on Fed Debt Purchase Plan

Japan’s bonds rose, pushing 10-year yields toward a seven-year low, after Federal Reserve policy makers said they plan to purchase government debt in their first attempt to boost the economy in more than a year.

Bonds also gained after a report showed Japan’s machine orders grew at a slower pace than economists had forecast and the yen strengthened toward an eight-month high, damping the outlook for exporters’ earnings. The government will sell 2.4 trillion yen ($28 billion) of five-year notes today.

“Financial markets will pay the most attention to whether the Fed’s balance sheet will expand further,” said Akito Fukunaga, chief rates strategist in Tokyo at Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc., Britain’s biggest government-owned bank. “As there’s still a risk Treasuries may surge, it’s not the time for investors to go short on Japan’s bonds.” A short position is a bet an asset will fall.

Luckily, despite reports this morning that the country star who can't seem to catch a break was hospitalized for a possible drug overdose, the singer says no such drama unfolded.

Hollywood Hills home

Brittany Murphy’s husband, Simon Monjack, was found dead (reportedly from natural causes, according to Reuters) in the Hollywood Hills home he shared with the “Clueless” star, and where Murphy was discovered unconscious in December.

Murphy’s cause of death was ruled cardiac arrest brought on by pneumonia, anemia and prescription drugs. Monjack, 39, initially blamed the 32-year-old actress’ death on a Hollywood studio that dropped Murphy from the "Happy Feet" sequel.

I Was playing for half an hour last night and I made it three times! lol!Fun, right? Yeah, I tried to play a couple of times this morning - realizing quickly that I should stick to the full-size arcade version. But in the middle of a game, the phone rang and I hit the mute button on my keyboard and went back to work.

A couple of hours later - and numerous browser windows and browser tabs later - I clicked on the link for a news video and had no audio. I hit the volume button, taking the machine out of mute mode, and was surprised to hear what sounded like a siren coming from my machine.

Michigan school wins Obama as graduation speaker

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A school in western Michigan has won a contest to have President Barack Obama make its commencement address this spring.

Kalamazoo Central High School was one of three finalists in the Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge. Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the winner Tuesday.

Three Childree dead tornado

Three children were among the victims of a tornado that tore through central Mississippi over the weekend, a coroner said Sunday.

Two sisters, ages 9 and 14, were killed inside a mobile home, Choctaw County Coroner Keith Coleman told CNN. Separately, a 3-month-old baby died because of the twister, he said.

The tornado, almost a mile wide, killed at least 10 people and decimated neighborhoods as it raked cities from the central western border with Louisiana northeastward to Alabama.
